Quran calls the humanity to contemplate about ,and search for birds’ soaring.
Quran verses hint, that scientific discoveries supply partial explanations and it is only the Providence that keeps birds up in
the skies.
Quran says: Do they not see the birds above them with wings outspread and [sometimes] folded in? None holds them [aloft] except the Most Merciful. Indeed He is, of all things, Seeing. 67:19
Man has always been trying to resolve the mystery of birds' flight and soaring . Last researches found out that soaring birds change their altitude in order to benefit from warm air columns rising from earth surface called ( thermals) or air currents turning back after hitting cliffs (updrafts) this way birds gain altitude and at the same time glide horizontally. When observing immigrant birds in their journey scientists discovered that they flapped once in a while for they spent most of their time soaring
( Do they not see the birds above them with wings outspread ) once in a while
they flapped and beat with them ( and [sometimes] folded in?). Birds make minimum efforts while flying because they efficiently utilize the energy of winds. A prominent example is the "albatrosses" a big marine bird which it's wingspan is 3.5 meters , it flies more than 10 thousand km above oceans soaring without a single flap , using dynamic soaring of changing altitudes by flying from the relatively windless layer close to the ocean waves into a region of much faster winds above it. This gives the birds a boost in airspeed that allows them to soar 30 to 50 feet into the air.
Then they turn, gliding with the wind to get an additional speed boost while swooping downward close to the sea waves. In spite of the information supplied by researches , birds' flight and soaring remain a riddle yet to be completely solved . ( None holds them [aloft] except the Most
Merciful )
